Are there any other traditions that I need to be aware of as a parent of a young child?

Do you have a child aged 0-3 or expecting a baby?

You should be aware that in Hungary ‘name day’ is an important occasion. If you buy a Hungarian calendar, these name days will be listed. It is traditional to celebrate the teacher, the paediatritian or other Hungarians you regularly meet with a small present, such as flower or chocolate.

In most cases there will be photos, videos made of your child when they participate at a special occasion at crèche, kindergarten or go to a birthday celebration. If you don’t want your child in the photo, you have to say it beforehand.

It is also customary to have birthday parties, at children’s homes or at a playhouse. At these occasions you are required to bring a small present, and your child can expect to be offered food, drinks and games. In some communities, especially when it is mostly small children, parents are also invited.
