The legal guardians enrol their child at the primary school responsible in the school district where the child is resident. The school bearer may also provide a community school for enrolment. During the period from 1 to 8 December of each year, the headmaster of primary school will announce time and place of registration for the school visit. The parents enrol the children in the period from 10 to 20 December. When registering, the birth certificate of the child must be presented. Parents can register a child with special educational needs also directly at the appropriate special school (§ 119 Thüringer school regulations).

The dates for registration at a secondary school are announced in time every year. There are no special acceptance criteria for regular school, admission to grade 5 of the community school and for the comprehensive school. Registration at the school is sufficient.

A child can attend the Gymnasium if it has been rated at least grade "good" in the subjects German, mathematics, as well as homeland and subject knowledge for the fourth class. If the grades are not sufficient, the child may, at the request of the parents, receive a recommendation for attending Gymnasium from primary school. If the recommendation is not given, admission to the Gymnasium can be made possible by passing an entrance examination (§§ 130 ff. Thüringer chool regulations).
