Different foreign languages are taught at the schools in Thüringen. English is compulsory from the third school year. In addition, primary schools have the opportunity to offer foreign language lessons from grade 1 onwards. Currently, the languages English, French, Russian and Italian are taught at primary schools in Thüringen, with English having a clear priority.

In secondary schools in Thüringen in addition to English as the first foreign language, all pupils are offered a second foreign language, French or Russian, in grades 7 to 10 as a compulsory elective subject.
At Gymnasium in Thüringen, the first foreign language (mostly English) is taught from grade 5, a second foreign language is added in grade 7, from grade 9, a third foreign language is offered as an optional subject at some schools. The chosen foreign languages are taught up to grade 10. As first or second foreign languages English, French, Russian and Latin and as third foreign language also Greek, Italian, Spanish can be learned.
