Every pregnant woman in Germany has a statutory right to adequate medical examinations and advice from midwives and doctors. The costs of prenatal care are covered by the public and private health insurance companies. If a pregnant woman benefits according to the Federal Social Assistance Act, the social welfare office will pay the costs.

In some federal states, refugees or asylum seekers who have left the reception centers and have been assigned to the municipalities can receive a health card. Who owns this card can go to the doctor and the costs are covered by the health insurances. In municipalities that do not issue a health card, asylum seekers receive certificates for medical treatment for the doctor's visit.

Asylum seekers receive medical care under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act.

The costs of the treatment of acute illnesses and pain, including the supply of medicines and dressings, as well as the vaccinations recommended by the Standing Committee for Vaccination and medically required preventive examinations, will be covered. Check-ups and medical services during pregnancy and after childbirth are included in the benefits and are paid.

In Sachsen-Anhalt there is no health card for asylum seekers in the first 15 months of their stay. Asylum seekers must apply certificates for medical treatment at the local Social Welfare Office.

In order to give pregnant women without health insurance access to examinations, medical care and, of course, a safe birth, the Malteser Medical of Malteser Hilfsdienst e. V. offers for people without health insurance at 18 locations (an 18 Standorten) in Germany special gynecological consultations and consultations. Volunteer doctors take over the check-ups and take care to find a place for maternity delivery in a hospital.
