Do you have a child aged 0-3 or expecting a baby?

The birth certificate is probably the most important document in a person's life. It proves existence and identity. It is the key to all other identity cards and administrative procedures.

The birth of a child must be reported to the civil registry office within whose jurisdiction the child is born within a week. The child is entered in the birth register.

Many hospitals offer the option of registering the child directly in the hospital. Then the birth certificate must be picked up at the registry office.

To indicate birth, each parent of the child is obliged if he is entitled to custody. If the parents are not able to do so, any other person who was present at birth or is aware of the birth, such as midwives, maternity wards, maternity nurses, or family members, is required to do so. For births in hospitals and other facilities, the institution is obliged to report the birth of the child.

The following documents must be submitted to the registry office:

• birth certificates of parents (in German translation, if applicable)

• Identity card, passport or other recognized passport paper of parents

• Marriage certificate or certified copy from the marriage register / family book (if applicable in German translation)

• birth certificate of the clinic

The registry office issues a birth certificate, which is required for the application for child benefit and parental allowance as well as for reporting to the health insurance fund or for religious purposes.

In addition, the civil registry office announces the birth certificate of the registration office. This facilitates the issuing of a children's pass by the passport and ID office, which uses the data of the registration office for this purpose.

Also, a registration with the health insurance should take place as soon as possible after birth. For the child you will receive your own insurance card. The child can also be admitted to the health insurance of the unmarried father. In this case, his health insurance requires paternity recognition.
