Does my child get all the preschool/school necessities, textbooks and equipment for free or do I have to buy them?
Germany - Nordrhein - Westfallen
English
Do you have a child aged 3-6?

In Nordrhein-Westfalen, the pupils are given the learning material less a personal contribution, in principle free of charge (§ 96 Education Act Nordrhein-Westfalen). Commodities and exercise materials are not part of the learning materials that are provided free of charge.

The annual own contribution, to which parents are obliged to procure learning materials according to the decision of the school at their own expense, is in the general education schools between 12 Euro and 30 Euro (https://www.schulministerium.nrw.de/docs/Recht/Schulrecht/Lernmittelfreiheit/). The own contribution does not apply for recipients of assistance to living according to the Social Code (SGB XII).

The basic equipment with personal school supplies for school attendance (school bag, pencil case, notebooks, pens, paint box, sports shoes, etc.) must be paid by parents in Germany. Further costs are the lunch in the amount of 3 to 4 euros daily. The early or late care in kindergarten or before or after the regular school time is chargeable. Excursions, theater visits and school journeys have to be paid by the parents.

Socially disadvantaged families can apply for benefits from the education and participation package. They will then receive a subsidy for lunch at school or for personal school equipment. The fare for public transportation to school and the cost of one- or several-day trips will be covered.
