Kindergartens and schools are not obliged to offer mother tongue education.

 

In Hessen, no special mother tongue teaching is offered in the kindergartens. There are bilingual kindergartens supporting the following languages: English, French, Turkish, Greek, Japanese, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese and Czech. Mother tongue teaching in schools in Hessen is given as an elective course at central locations across all types of schools. Mother tongue teaching is currently available for the following languages: Albanian.
