Parents have the choice between a public school or a private school. For enrollment, the children must be registered at the primary school responsible in the school district where the child is resident. In special justified cases, a child can change the school district upon request and be enrolled in another primary school (https://schulaemter.hessen.de/schulbesuch/schulbeginn).
For the registration at a secondary school parents can freely choose between the school types of the secondary schools after a consultation and recommendation by the primary school (https://schulaemter.hessen.de/schulbesuch/4nach5).
