In elementary school, English is taught from the third grade. In Bremen there is a special form of permeability for learning the French language: It begins in the German-French kindergarten and continues in elementary school at the Freiligrathstraße and in the Gymnasium Horn, with the possibility of a German-French Abitur - the AbiBac.
In secondary schools the first foreign language is English and is taught throughout. From year 6, secondary school pupils can choose a second foreign language. All pupils, who want to make a high school graduation have to learn a second foreign language from grade 6. At Gymnasium, the second foreign language is an obligation. The second foreign language is taught until the end of lower secondary school. Depending on the school, the second foreign language is French, Latin, Polish, Russian, Spanish or Turkish. The schools may also offer a third foreign language as an elective subject, e.g. Ancient Greek, Chinese or Italian. Building on the first foreign language, bilingual instruction is offered by several secondary schools.
A digital map of languages provides an overview of the language offer of general education schools in the city of Bremen, in the individual districts and at the individual school http://www.sprachenatlas.schule.bremen.de/
