Can I stay together with my child at the hospital?

Do you have a child aged 0-3 or expecting a baby?

Many hospitals offer inpatient admission or "rooming in children". The parents or a parent can then stay in the hospital room or nearby.

At the nursery, the health insurance always pays rooming-in, because both mother and child are patients.

The inpatient admission of the parents of sick children is usually calculated separately and not always paid by the health insurance. According to the catalog of benefits of the statutory health insurance, the costs for rooming-in in children are only assumed if the pediatrician or the hospital doctor certifies the necessity. Reasons could be:

• The treatment can only be carried out in the presence of the escort.

• Communication with the child is otherwise difficult.

• Due to the hospital stay, psychological damage to the child is to be expected without parental admission.

Please check in advance with your health insurance company, whether the costs for the stay of a parent in the hospital are taken over.
