In Germany, compulsory education is required, which means that all children living in Germany have to go to school. This duty applies regardless of the residence status of the children.
Home schooling is permitted in Germany only in very limited exceptional cases, e.g. if children cannot attend school because of a disability or illness (medical education).
The child must attend a public school or a state-approved private school. School attendance at state schools is free. Private schools usually ask for school fees.
If parents do not send their children to school, it is a violation of compulsory education, which can be punished by fine or compulsory custody.
