Every pregnant woman in Germany has a statutory right to adequate medical examinations and advice from midwives and doctors. The costs of prenatal care are covered by the public and private health insurance companies. If a pregnant woman benefits according to the Federal Social Assistance Act, the social welfare office will pay the costs.
Asylum seekers receive medical care under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act.
The costs of the treatment of acute illnesses and pain, including the supply of medicines and dressings, as well as the vaccinations recommended by the Standing Committee for Vaccination and medically required preventive examinations, will be covered. Check-ups and medical services during pregnancy and after childbirth are included in the benefits and are paid.
In Berlin, asylum seekers receive a health card which allows them to be treated directly in the doctors' surgeries. In order to give pregnant women without health insurance access to examinations, medical care and, of course, a safe birth, the Malteser Medical of Malteser Hilfsdienst e. V. offers for people without health insurance at 18 locations (an 18 Standorten) in Germany special gynecological consultations and consultations. Volunteer doctors take over the check-ups and take care to find a place for maternity delivery in a hospital.
