If your child is ill, you can stay at home. You might get an extra leave for that, depending on your working contract. In all cases you need a medical certificate. If you are staying at home to look after your children when they are ill, your health insurance company will pay a “Krankenkindergeld”. Please make sure that you follow all the rules concerning these issues, fixed in the working contract and the insurance contract. Ask for advice when needed! According to the law, each parent can have up to ten days per year to look after their ill children, a single parent can have up to 20 days. There are even more possible days if you have more than one child. The absolute limit are 25 days per parent or 50 days for a single parent. Please notice that the health insurance company only covers the “Krankenkindergeld” if your child is younger than 12 years and no other person in your household could take care of the child!
