In the state of Berlin, parents have the choice between a public school or a private school. For enrollment, the children must be registered at the school responsible in the school district where the child is resident.
For the registration at a secondary school parents can choose between the types of school integrated secondary school, community school or grammar school after a consultation and recommendation by the elementary school. Parents can freely choose the desired secondary school for their child. The school can also lie in a different district than the place of residence. There is also freedom of choice for the type of school.
