The kind of financial support you can get depend on your status. As an asylum seeker you will receive certain things as food or clothing in-kind and a certain amount of money for personal needs (these could be provided in-kind as well, but that would be too complicated to handle in most cases.) Personal needs cover expanses for cultural events, education, leisure time activities, transport or telephone. If you live in a rental home, the costs for heating and certain household items are covered as well. This can be provided in-kind or cash.

If a refuge lives in Germany, he or she has the right to support as stated in the “Sozialgesetzbuch XII” (see the chart below). These are similar to the so called “Hartz IV”. The amount of support may change each year. Please ask for advice to find out what kind of support you are able to receive.
