Every pregnant woman in Germany has a statutory right to adequate medical examinations and advice from midwives and doctors. The costs of prenatal care are covered by the public and private health insurance companies. If a pregnant woman benefits according to the Federal Social Assistance Act, the social welfare office will pay the costs.
Asylum seekers receive medical care under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act.
The costs of the treatment of acute illnesses and pain, including the supply of medicines and dressings, as well as the vaccinations recommended by the Standing Committee for Vaccination and medically required preventive examinations, will be covered. Check-ups and medical services during pregnancy and after childbirth are included in the benefits and are paid.
In Baden-Württemberg, asylum seekers do not receive a health card. The country issues medical treatment vouchers for necessary medical treatment and for vaccinations and check-ups. Before the visit to the doctor, patients must go to the local Social Welfare Office to get a medical treatment voucher before they visit the doctor. Medical check-ups and vaccinations are granted.
