There are no special regulation concerning the age of a child to travel alone in local transport. According to the BGB § 1626, the child should be able to ask for help if needed, behave in a responsible way, be aware of risks or danger, be able to keep arrangements. Being a school child does not automatically imply that a child is able to travel alone. Therefore, it cannot be stated for all children in general, if they are ready to travel alone at a certain age. In general, children at the age of 12 to 16 are able to use the public transport system on their own.
