What types of schools are available for children from 12-16 ages?

Do you have a child aged 12-16?

From the age of 12 your child is expected to attend secondary education (enseignement secondaire/secundair onderwijs).  There are 3 types of free secondary schools: state schools (GO) , charter school (OGO/CECP/CPEONS: subsidised by state) and freely subsidized school (VGO/FELSI/SeGEC: subsidised by non-profit associations which have either a religious or secular approach). Alternatively there are private secondary schools where there is a tuition fee to be paid.

Within the free secondary schools, from the age of 14 your child can choose between 4 programmes (which are not offered at every school)

  • ASO: general education
  • BSO: vocational education
  • TSO: combination general and vocational education
  • KSO: art education (ballet, visual arts, performing arts)
