In Belgium, dentists are called dentistes / tandartsen. You are free to choose your own dentist. They work to an agreed fee for basic treatment. Major dental work, such as an intervention by the orthodentist, will need prior approval from the mutuelle or private insurance. You pay the dentist yourself and then send the treatment receipts to the mutuelle/ insurer for reimbursement.
You will have to visit the dentist at least once a year for a check up to qualify for reimbursement from your health insurance scheme, and children are advised to see the dentist twice a year.
