Learning a second language is compulsory from the 5th grade in primary school level in Wallonia and Flanders and from the 3rd grade in Brussels and some Wallonian/ Flemish communes. French is compulsory as a second language in the Flemish schools, but in the French-speaking schools they can choose between English or Flemish.
In addition, some elementary schools participate in a language immersion program. This program consists of giving courses (other than language courses) in another language.
In the German-speaking Community, learning French (first language) begins in kindergarten through play activities and continues in primary school in the form of a more systematic course.
Moreover, in some schools, physical education, artistic workshops, etc. are conducted in French.
