Learning a second language is compulsory from the 5th primary school level in Wallonia and Flanders and from the 3rd primary school level in Brussels and some Wallonian/ Flemish communes. French will be taught as second language in the Flemish schools, Dutch or English in the French-speaking schools.
In addition, some elementary schools participate in a language immersion program. This program consists of giving courses (other than language courses) in another language.
In the German-speaking Community, learning French (first language) begins in kindergarten through play activities and continues in primary school in the form of a more systematic course.
Moreover, in some schools, some subjects such as physical education, artistic workshops, etc. are conducted in French.
